The Odyssey review: Family drama sadly runs out of steam in beautifully shot drama

The naval officer, underwater explorer, TV star, award-winning film-maker and serial adulterer definitely crammed a lot into his 87 restless years on Earth.

Sadly, director Jerome Salle tries to stuff too much into The Odyssey.

We meet Jacques (Lambert Wilson) at the end of the Second World War as he abandons the military for a life as an underwater pioneer.

Some canny business decisions turn him into a global star but his relationship with his favourite son Philippe (Pierre Niney) becomes strained.

As his career is mostly plain sailing, this is the main source of the drama. Sadly, it isn’t quite enough to power this meandering movie.

Thankfully, the underwater scenes are beautifully shot – a sequence where cocky Philippe is surrounded by killer sharks is almost worth the price of admission alone.
