The American drama, which sees a future deeply changed by nuclear war, portrays a group of young women – who are now Handmaids – assigned to men who need to produce an offspring.
The graphic scenes show what is essentially rape during a twisted ritual which sees the men’s wives stay “pure” whilst the Handmaids are forced to bear children if they can.
Despite the horrific scenes, the dystopian fiction has been a big success and it seems that Hulu bosses couldn’t wait to sign the cast up for a second season.
The streaming service’s Head of Content, Craig Erwich said: “The response we’ve seen has been absolutely incredible.
“The Handmaid’s Tale is exactly the type of gripping and thought-provoking storytelling we want to bring to viewers.
“We can’t wait to continue Margaret’s vision with another season,” he added.
Atwood herself has spoken out about the future of Offred (played by Elisabeth Moss), adding that the original story’s ambiguous ending has always been a mystery to her.
The author told Entertainment Weekly: “We will be in uncharted territories, so more invention will have to take place.
“I myself have never known what happened to Offred,” Atwood teased.
The Handmaid’s Tale airs on Channel 4 on Sundays at 9pm.
