'Super speed camera' dubbed a ‘NIGHTMARE’ for motorists is heading to the UK

A brand-new speed camera could soon arrive in England, which could spell trouble for UK motorists.

The new speed camera was launched by Belgian company SecuRoad and it uses infrared lightest catch out motorists.

By using infrared lights, the car drivers do not notice if they are indeed captured on camera.

It can also be hidden almost anywhere for example in an inconspicuous rubbish bin or a car.

The speed camera is called NK7 and the Belgian company says it can be used without anyone operating it.

After initial tests, the device was deemed to be a success and could soon be trialled on British roads.

This is partly due to the fact is can monitor six driving lanes at one time, three in either direction.

A SecuRoad spokesman said: “One picture is sufficient, because it can be cloned and the information for each vehicle stays available.”

The spokesman called their new toy “a nightmare for the speeder” and said the device would cost about 50,000 EUR (41,969 GBP) to buy.

Belgian authorities currently have 20 of them in operation in a bid to catch and deter speeding drivers.

In Belgium, the devices are hidden in bins and put on the pavement next to where they want to enforce a speed limit.

Yesterday the speed camera made its debut in the city of Ghent. According to local media it was a symbolic debut, as the garbage bin was put exactly on the spot where 16 years ago two young female friends died when they were hit by a speeding car of a drunk-driver.

Local media noted that also Germany has started to use similar speed cameras.

According to the SecuRoad spokesman, there are plans to use the camera as well in other Western European countries, which might mean it can soon make its debut as well across the North Sea.
