Suicide Squad sequel: 'Racist and sexist' Mel Gibson news leaves fans FURIOUS

Hollywood may have started to forgive and forget the Australian star’s previous sins but many fans are not convinced. Gibson is currently riding high after his powerful directorial triumph with Hacksaw Ridge saw him embraced once more by the film industry.

Reports that he was being lined up to direct the Suicide Squad sequel have not gone down as well with the comicbook fandom.

One fan wrote: “Harley Quinn, the biggest star of Suicide Squad, is Jewish and a survivor of domestic violence. Mel Gibson is THE worst possible choice.”

Many of the comments refer to Gibson’s infamous period of disgrace, kick-started by his arrest in 2006 for drunk driving. During the arrest he launched into an anto-Semitic tirade which was recorded by the police officer.

Subsequent allegations of sexism, racism and homophobia dogged him thorughout the decade, coupled with his admissions of alcohol abuse.

Another fan wrote: “I can imagine Viola Davis getting p***ed if Mel Gibson directs Suicide Squad 2.”

Davies has become a symbol of the resurgence of black and female actors in Hollywood over recent years. Many other comments, however, also took the opportunity to slam the original Suicide Squad in the process.

One wrote: “Mel Gibson might direct a Suicide Squad sequel? Serious question: Did Suicide Squad have a director?”

Another added: “Mel Gibson directing Suicide Squad 2 is the worst decision WB has made since releasing Suicide Squad.”

The recent Warner Bros film was the latest DC Comics adaptation to come under fire from fans, many of whom are not happy with the tone or vision of the cinematic franchise.

One fan said: “Mel Gibson potentially directing a Suicide Squad sequel is more evidence that WB actually wants us to hate its DC characters.”
