Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi to reveal why Luke Skywalker IGNORED Leia – 'He's shunned her'

Whether or not the siblings will come face-to-face in The Last Jedi remains to be seen, but it seems we could at least understand more of why their paths haven’t crossed in so long.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Mark Hamill – who plays Luke – said: “Luke longs to have that extended family that he established in the original trilogy, but now he’s at a place in his life and in his history where he’s shunned all of that.

“The big question is why didn’t he respond to Leia during [The Force Awakens]?

“There’s a lot of things you can’t answer until you see this movie.”

Carrie Fisher, who played Leia, sadly died at the end of 2016 after completing work on the latest Star Wars chapter.

That means that if Luke and Leia do meet, it will be all the more bittersweet – and all the more heartbreaking if they don’t.

Hamill went on: “It’s very important for Luke to feel grounded and feel like he has a family. I think he loves her dearly.

“I mean, I can’t separate Leia from Carrie and Mark from Luke in that regard because we were like real siblings.

“We had these huge rows and we blew hot and cold, but months even years would go by and then you’d see them again and it’s like…”

Numerous TV spots have been released for The Last Jedi in recent weeks; the newest of which sees Luke trying to keep Rey (Daisy Ridley) from being tempted by the Dark Side.

It’s also been said by Laura Dern that her own character, Vice Admiral Holdo, will provide some opposition for Leia – as well as Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac).

But what exactly happens to all the characters in the saga won’t be answered for another few weeks.

Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi is out on December 14 in the UK.
