Rogue One director Edwards – speaking at a BAFTA Cymru charity fundraiser event last week – revealed that he and Johnson engaged in light-hearted sparring when their paths would cross.
Discussing the pressure of making sure Rogue One lived up to expectations, he recalled: “Rian Johnson was working while we were working.
“I would joke with him that his benchmark was The Empire Strikes Back.
“Like, ‘it’s alright Rian, you just have to be better than Empire Strikes Back!’”
To loud laughter from the audience, he added: “And as the first Star Wars standalone, we had to be better than Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure.”
However, the gag soon made for a very uncomfortable moment indeed.
“So as a joke, I went and bought a giant Ewok Adventure poster and it was in my office,” Edwards continued.
“Then one day George Lucas came over out of the blue, and he comes in and I’m s****ing myself, and its only when he comes in that I remember my Ewok Adventure poster.
