SS-GB: Viewers OUTRAGED at BBC sound team as they struggle to hear actor's dialogue

Those watching the first episode of the BBC show quickly switched off after complaining about the poor sound quality and “mumbling” actors.

The drama series, based on the novel by Len Deighton, is set in an alternative 1941 where the Germans have won the Battle of Britain.

Detective Douglas Archer (played by Sam Riley) found himself working under the brutal SS in occupied London, but the audience could not keep up with the plot.

One viewer tweeted: “I really wanted #SSGB to be good but I can’t understand a word the main guy is saying? He keeps mumbling.”

“Can Sam Riley please stop this weird faux-whispery thing?! I’m too young for subtitles… but they’re on. #ssgb,” asked another.

A third said: “#SSGB Hmpf. Disappointed that I probably won’t be able to watch this due to the terribly annoying lead man’s gruff whispers.”

“Really poor sound quality on #ssgb so much so, subtitles are needed!” said a fourth, as another raged: “Stop mumbling!!!! #SSGB.”

However, this is not the first time the BBC sound department has received complaints from the hard-of-hearing audience, with fans comparing it to Jamaica Inn.

One viewer tweeted: “#SSGB is a bit whispery. The curse of Jamaica Inn, Happy Valley and Rillington Place strikes again? #BBCDrama.”

“Had to put subtitles on #SSGB despite it being in English. Is it the same sound person as Jamaica Inn? #BBC,” posted another.

A third said: “Another BBC drama we have to turn the sound up for. Speak up! #ssgb.”

“#SSGB don’t want to be a curmudgeon before my time, but could these actors stop mumbling and growling? Must be all the smoking those days,” posted a fourth.

Express.co.uk contacted the BBC requesting comment regarding these complaints. The broadcaster declined to comment.

SS-GB continues next Sunday on at 9pm.
