Soldiers will soon see real-time drone feeds on handheld devices

• The Army is developing handheld devices that will be able to stream live footage from friendly unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), giving soldiers a real-time aerial view of the battlefield.
• The non-handheld version of the system, called the One System Remote Video Terminal (OSRVT), is already in place on a number of vehicles and is operated across the Army.
• Previously, drone footage had to be linked through laptops or computer screens, forcing soldiers to carry larger equipment into battle.

The Army and Textron Systems are developing a lightweight portable One System Remote Video Terminal (OSRVT) that allows dismounted soldiers to view real-time nearby drone video feeds using a modified frequency.

OSRVTs have been in combat with the Army since 2007. They are integrated into vehicle platforms such as Stryker vehicles, allowing infantry to view feeds and control sensor payloads from nearby drones while on the move.
