Rarest £2 coin worth SIXTEEN times original value in circulation – do YOU have one?

Four designs were made to celebrate the Commonwealth Games in 2002, with one for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The most sought-after of the four designs is the coin designed for England, but it can be hard to spot it among a pile of change.

This is because the four coins feature the same design with only the flag to tell them apart.

The England coin is nearly identical to the Northern Irish version, with the only mark of difference being the small “Red Hand of Ulster” on the NI coin.

ChangeChecker.org, coin experts, now rank the England coin at the top of the £2 coin scarcity index, making it the most sought after £2.

This has seen prices soar on eBay, where collectors have been selling the coin for about 16 times its value at £32.

By comparison, other rare two pound coins usually fetch around £6 to £8 when sold on.

The rare £2 coin is not the only sterling to keep an eye out for at the moment – a Beatrix Potter 50p coin featuring Jemima Puddleduck is worth £400.

Many collectors are after the whole set – that includes Squirrel Nutkin, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and Peter Rabbit. This means some of the rarer coins are worth even more as fans aim to collect them all.

Some people are paying up to £400 for the coin, according to a financial expert.

The Peter Rabbit coin has proved most popular but the desire to have the whole set means the rarest coin is fast becoming the most expensive.

If you aren’t sure if your pound coin is worth anything, this is how to find out its value.

With the launch of the new 12-sided £1 coin back in March, coin collectors have been desperate to snap up coins missing from their collection, as the old £1 coins get taken out of circulation.

The new £1 coin has now been in circulation for just less than four months, and experts at Changechecker.org have revealed the rise in interest for old £1 coins could be driving up the interest of some coin
