Rare 1960s Aston Martin DB6 with one owner sells for £750k

The gleaming dark blue, four litre DB6 Volante Vantage is one of only 29 built and some of those went to the celebrities of the day including Paul McCartney, Twiggy, Peter Sellers and Mick Jagger.

The Queen gave one to Prince Charles for his 21st birthday and in 2011 it was driven down The Mall by Prince William after his marriage to Kate Middleton.

This one, with just 39,000 miles on the clock, was purchased in 1968 by Granada Television founder Sidney Bernstein for his wife.

Bernstein’s great wealth after founding Granada Television enabled him to purchase the motor, which has a whopping four litre 300hp engine rocketing it to speeds of over 150mph.

Finished in pacific blue, this example has amassed a surprisingly low 39,000 miles since Bernstein gifted it to his wife Sandra in 1968.

She had already owned an Aston but wanted one with power steering.

The generous present was given in the same year Mr Bernstein was made a lord by Prime Minister Harold Wilson for his work in television, having founded Granada Television in 1954.

Mr Bernstein, who lives in the west country, said: “Frankly, I don’t drive it enough and I am not a car collector.

“Through the passage of time and the good fortune of inheriting the car from my mother I have found myself the owner of a unique piece of British motoring heritage.

“I realise that I am not the right person to cherish the car as it should be cherished.”

Their son David put it up for auction in Dorchester, Dorset, for a hammer price of £650,000 plus fees.

Guy Schwinge, of Duke’s Auctioneers, said: “When I first saw the car emerge from the darkness of the garage my heart missed a beat.”
