Princess Diana documentary: William reveals paparazzi SPAT at mother and made her cry

Sharing some of his earliest memories of about his mother, William told how the paparazzi used to spit at Diana and try to provoke a reaction.

Speaking as part of a 20th anniversary documentary about the late royal, the 35-year-old said that the public would have been “utterly appalled” if they knew what went on behind the scenes.

William said: “Back then 20 years ago, people would be utterly appalled if they knew exactly what went on [with the paparazzi].

“I think it was an industry which lost its way quite heavily, lost its sense of decency, lost its perspective on what was appropriate.

“You are the Princess of Wales, you are a mother.”

He continued: “I don’t believe that being chased by 30 guys on motorbikes, who block your path, who spit at you, who shout at you and who react really badly to get a reaction from you and make a woman cry in public to get the photographs – I don’t believe that is appropriate.

“I certainly remember most of the time she ever cried was to do with press intrusion.

“Her and I, we lived with that and one lesson I’ve learnt is never let them in because once it’s crossed it’s too far.

“A lot of pain and problems can come from that.”
