The 35-year-old spoke openly about Diana for a new ITV documentary, titled Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy.
Asked how he keeps her memory alive for his children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, William revealed that he refers to “Granny Diana” while putting them to bed.
William chuckled: “I think constantly talking about Granny Diana. So we’ve got more photos up around the house now of her and we talk about her a bit and stuff.
“It’s hard because obviously Catherine didn’t know her, so she cannot really provide that… that level of detail.”
He added: “So I… I do regularly, putting George or Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try and remind them that there are two grandmothers, there were two grandmothers in their lives.
“So it’s important that they know who she was and that she existed.”
Speaking about how she may have been as a grandmother to mark the 20th anniversary of her death, William teased that she would be an “absolute nightmare”.
He continued: “She’d be a nightmare grandmother, absolute nightmare. She’d love the children to bits, but she’d be an absolute nightmare.
“She’d come and go and she’d come in probably at bath time, cause an amazing amount of scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place… and then leave.”
It comes as William told how his mother arranged for him to have supermodels waiting for him upon his return from school when he was 12 years old.
Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy airs tomorrow on ITV at 9pm.
