Legrand Legacy: Tale of the Fatebounds calls itself “a love letter to our all time favorite JRPGs”, and judging from the city populating drawn from Suikoden, the involved turn-based combat it pulls from Shadow Hearts, and the complex storyline not unlike Final Fantasy, it’s a well-deserved claim. Taking players on a journey from slave to world-saving warrior, it promises an incredible adventure and reams of tantalizing, deep side-activities that are so rarely seen in games any more.
Finn starts life as a slave, but a demonstration of unknown power soon puts him on a road to saving his owner’s daughter, meeting up with powerful warriors, and eventually saving a world from an ancient conflict that (surprise, surprise) is starting to rear its head again. Saving the world isn’t exactly easy, either, as Legrand Legacy doesn’t let you just spam attack in its turn-based combat. Players have to hit the attack button with the right timing to boost damage, as well as know which elemental weaknesses to abuse to have a fighting chance. There will be no sleeping through combat in this game.
Still…saving the world can wait, right? Because collecting people to flesh out Dumville Castle carries its own appeal, entertaining players by letting them bring merchants, blacksmiths, and party members to join the fray and make the place seem a little more lived in. If hiring doesn’t appeal, players can always take on narrative sidequests to flesh out character stories, practice fencing, scrap in hack n’ slash fights, go fishing, and much more. There are tons of diversions in Legrand Legacy, bringing back one of the excellent qualities of old JRPGs.
They don’t make games like this that often any more, so if you miss the variety and complexity of older JRPGs, you need to get in on this one.
