Pokemon Go has reached a big new milestone with Niantic teasing those new updates

Pokemon Go has now officially past 650 million downloads worldwide, a sizable number for the popular Android and Apple app.

The new details were confirmed during the 2017 Game Developers Conference in which we also found out more on the planned update schedule.

Fans have been pondering when the next major drop will occur, what with Niantic already confirming that at least two more major updates are being primed for 2017.

Niantic chief technology officer Phil Keslin went a step further today, teasing that while those major patches will look to refresh the game much like the Gen 2 update did, they won’t be the only ones.

Keslin confirmed that regular content updates are being planned, suggesting that the game will be peppered with smaller ones between the larger releases.

July 2017 seems the next likely date for major Pokemon Go update no.2, what with it being Pokemon Go’s anniversary month.

Other interesting tidbits were also offered up by Niantic during GDC 2017, including the fact that Pokemon Go players on Android and Apple have now managed to walk a fair distance.

The new milestone now stands at approximately 8.7 billion kilometers (5.4 billion miles) traveled while playing the game, and  “just shy of Pluto,” according to Keslin.

It follows the news that Pokemon Go attracted 12 million players with the release of the Gen 2 update, and climbed back up the app charts.

That’s according to data collected by Wandera (via Forbes), which reveals that players have already started switching off again.

The 12 million player spike is also nowhere near the heights achieved by the game last summer, when Pokemon Go peaked with around 25 million players.

The release of Gen 2 did coincide with a cash boost for the game, but the earlier Valentine’s update was the lowest grossing event since launch.

Niantic will be hoping that the next major updates perform better, although they’re currently without a release date.
