Piers Morgan RAGES at Police Commissioner for 'ENCOURAGING' heroine abuse in heated spat

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the TV host challenged the decision, which will see up to £15,000 spent on each heroin user, and accused the police force of fuelling drug abuse.

“The addiction itself is illegal, how can we have a police force actively encouraging people to break the law and indeed helping them to do it,” the 52-year-old blasted.

“Taking these early intervention steps we’re actually being proactive and getting on the front foot and reducing the level of crimes and the level of victims,” Hogg hit back.

The proposal will see heroin addicts supplied with the drug twice daily, a method that charity worker Elizabeth Burton-Phillips, who lost one son to the addiction and risked losing a second, refuted.

Giving her view on the police’s contentious plan, she said: “It’s extremely controversial and heroine is not a 9-5 addiction.

“I think any family member [who knows somebody suffering with heroine abuse] will understand the impact of addiction on their lives. It causes theft and crime and family members are usually the most effected.”

Further disparaging the plan, Burton-Phillips went on to claim that addicts would see it “as an opportunity to get heroine and not for recovery”.

But reiterating what the positive results previous tests had shown, Hogg affirmed: “It showed that this regime is effective with certain people. It will work and it delivers.

“Plus there’s evidence across the world reduces and we’re supporting evidence based work.”

Asked if she could see the plan working, Burton-Phillips responded: “I can’t. The impact of addiction is massive on the families. They want recovery and abstinence.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6.00am on ITV.
