The world’s most scenic roads have been revealed

From the long stretching roads through California to coastal drives across Italy, a great road trip relies on a great road.

Driving with the windows rolled down, and the radio blasting is a feeling like no other, whether on the world’s quietest roads or best roads in the UK

If you are rolling the maps out and heading for the ultimate road trip this summer, then these are the roads you need to be heading for.

Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, Austria

Referred to as the ‘High Alpine Road’, the clue is in the title. This rocky stretch of road covers all basis running through green mountain pastured, flower meadows, rock formations and ice and snow.

The mountain pass stretch 48 km with 36 bends taking drivers straight into the centre of Austria’s largest national park.

Highway 1, Monterey County, California

America is notorious for its epic road trips with the highway route through Monterey County no exception.

The route has been named one of the best scenic drives in the US as it winds through wetlands, working fish ports, vast stretches of fields and rolling dunes.

The Atlantic Road, Norway

Joining two sections of land, this beautiful stretch of road is unique. Stretching out and across the ocean, the road brings the seafront right into the laps of the drivers.

In 2005 the road was voted Norway’s ‘Engineering Feat of the Century’, and it’s still referred to as one of the world’s most beautiful drives.

Running from the Mossel Bay in the west to Storm River in the east, the road is just over 200 km long.

Dotted along the coast are sandy beaches, picture-perfect lakes and rolling hills leading off into the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountain ranges.

This 50-kilometre stretch of coastline runs along the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula.

Almost covering Argentina, Route 40 is one of the longest roads in the world. Passing everything from flat open plains to bustling cities and vast lakes, this road-trip route is a one-stop-shop for scenery.
