2. The Panama Canal was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914.

3. During this period, around 5,600 workers on the canal died from accidents or disease.

4. The Panama Canal now generates one-third of Panama’s entire economy.

5. Panama City is the world’s only capital which has a rain forest within city limits.

6. Panama Hats originated in Ecuador where most of them are still made.

7. Nearly a thousand bird species and 1,200 species of orchid can be seen in Panama.

8. The currency of Panama is the balboa but since 1904, one balboa has been equal to one US dollar.

9. Panama’s only Olympic gold medal was won by Irving Saladino in the Men’s Long Jump in Beijing in 2008.

10. The critically endangered Pygmy three-toed sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus) is only found on the tiny island of Escudo de Veraguas in Panama.
