Pacific Rim Uprising trailer: Did they seriously just DISS Marvel & DC superhero movies?

The first sneak peak teaser was shown at San Diego Comic-Con.

The Last Jedi star Boyega takes centre stage as Jack Pentecost, the latest plucky human hero to strap into a giant mechanical JAEGER suit to fight the evil aliens. And no, we don’t mean the fashion label Jaeger.

Uprising follows on from the 2013 Guillermo del Toro original and it looks like humanity has upgraded its technology in giant mechanised leaps and bounds.

Scott Eastwood and Tian Jing strap in alongside Boyega in a trailer that seems to say the world doesn’t need silly superheroes who “fall from the sky.”

The teaser trailer plays like a recruitment video, singing the praises of the JAEGERS and their brave human operators.

Listen very carefully to the promotional voice-over, though. In amongst all the stirring talk it sounds very much like they are making a sly, and not too subtle, dig at all the other superhero movies out there.

Read the following text and see if you agree.

The voice-over says: “What is a JAEGER? A JEAGER is the pinnacle of human invention. When the monsters came, we did not wait for heroes to fall from the sky and save us.”

This doesn’t just sound like a general diss of superheroes, it sounds like a direct reference to Superman, who “fell from the sky” in his ship from Krypton.

The language gets even more direct as it continues on to directly dismiss the need for “superheroes.”

It continues: “We saved ourselves. Innovation is our superpower. What is a JEAGER? It is you, times a thousand. With a beating heart that burns brighter than the sun, enabling us all to become the most heroic versions of ourselves.”

Who needs Batman, The Avengers and all the rest?, it seems to say…

Either way, it’s stirring stuff, accompanied by explosive images of the new cast and their incredible suits.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is out in UK cinemas on February 23, 2018
