NTAs 2018: Dermot O'Leary forced to fight off stage invader in unaired confrontation

Dermot O’Leary was on stage with Bruce Forsyth’s widow Wilnelia to present an award when an unknown man rushed on.

The incident took place during the VT which listed the nominations for the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment award, which Ant and Dec went on to win.

In snaps taken at the ceremony held at the O2 Arena, Dermot can be seen intercepting the mystery man as Wilnelia watched on.

He was pictured stopping the man from reaching the microphone as security swiftly descended onto the stage.

The man, who appeared to be a protester, held onto a piece of paper and wore a T-Shirt, which read: “Oppression of ideas is not freedom like UK media thinks.”

As the incident happened during a VT, it was not broadcast on television.

Ahead of Ant and Dec being awarded the gong, Wilnelia spoke about her late husband.

“I’m so proud and honoured that this special award is named after my darling Brucie,” she declared.

Holly took the opportunity to joke with the presenter, declaring he was the new sexual health doctor on This Morning.

“Bradley Walsh is our new doctor,” she shouted.

“He’s taking over sexual health so if anyone has an issue, come and speak to Doctor Brad.”

The National Television Awards will be available to watch on the ITV Hub.
