If Ross Miller’s review of the Nintendo Switch is any indication, this is a great device to take with you everywhere and anywhere…. except to an aquarium, evidently.
Addressing some known connectivity issues with the Switch’s Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo cautioned that nearby wireless devices may cause interference, preventing the Joy-Con from pairing to the main system properly or registering the correct controls. A list of locations where Nintendo suggests you shouldn’t place the Switch console includes “within three to four feet of another wireless device, such as a wireless speaker or a wireless access point,” “behind a TV,” “in or under a metal object,” and “near an aquarium.”
Additionally, sources of interference include devices most people own. The full list is below:
- Cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc.
- Wireless headsets
- Wireless printers
- Microwaves
- Wireless speakers
- Cordless phones
- USB 3.0-compatible devices such as hard drives, thumb drives, LAN adapters, etc.
Let’s pretend I’m willing to throw away my laptop, iPad, and smartphone so that I could enjoy playing the Switch. Wireless printer? Cordless phone? IN THE TRASH! But microwave? Do not threaten my livelihood, Nintendo.
The company did not clarify whether the Joy-Con issue affects all devices, or just select systems.
