Mercedes-Benz has just revealed its new A-class compact hatchback for the European market, but it isn’t coming to the United States (Canada will be getting it, though). Luckily, an eagle-eyed Twitter user sent us these photos of the upcoming baby Benz that is slated to come to the States: the A-class sedan, which is looking more and more production-ready as it prepares for its U.S. debut later this year.

Don’t think of this model as a direct replacement for the cheapest Benz currently sold here, the CLA-class, as that’s a sort of “four-door coupe” variant of the outgoing A-class with a more rakish roofline. It’s somewhat hard to tell through the camouflage, but this A-class sedan will have a more upright greenhouse and, possibly, a cheaper price than the current CLA’s $ 33,695 starting cost. A new CLA will follow the A-class sedan by a few months with slightly swoopier looks.

These photos show plenty of overlap styling-wise with the hatch, and we expect the A-class sedan to share its powertrain with the European-market version’s top engine choice, a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with an estimated 221 horsepower that will pair with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive will be standard, with 4Matic all-wheel drive a likely option. Look for more information to come as Mercedes prepares to officially show this new small sedan that should go on sale in the States by the end of the year as a 2019 model.
