Mother!: Jennifer Lawrence horror BOOED after premiere screening – ‘It’s such a mess’

Although good reviews have also emerged online, there has been plenty of negative response to the highly-anticipated movie on social media.

One audience member said: “#mothermovie is such a mess I am actually feeling sorry for myself right now. #Venezia74.”

Another tweeted: “#mothermovie gets booed at its #venezia74 press premiere. And deservedly so: a self referential, near ridiculous trip. Big disappointment.”

“Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! is a horrific film with nothing but horrific characters. Exclamation point #Venezia74 #mother!” read an additional post.

Variety’s review was also critical, saying: “It’s more like a dazzlingly skillful machine of virtual reality designed to get nothing but a rise out of you. It’s a baroque nightmare that’s about nothing but itself.”

However, there’s also been plenty of praise.

One person said: “Darren Aronofsky’s mother! is a twisted, often inspired, often insane fever dream of a film. #Venezia74.”

“Mother! takes on all of humanity’s insanity at once, wraps it in a grand metaphor and shoots it in your face unapologetically #venezia74,” hailed another.

The film’s trailers – which have given little away in terms of plot – have certainly left audiences rattled.

Javier Bardem and Michelle Pfeiffer also star.

Mother! is out on September 15.
