The most livable cities have been revealed in a new study by consulting firm Mercer.
Analysing 231 cities, it used aspects such as political stability, education, crime and transport to find which cities came out on top.
Whilst the top ten has eight countries from Europe, the UK didn’t fare very well on the list.
Did any UK countries get chosen as “livable cities”?
Vienna took the number one spot for having the best quality of living for the ninth year in a row.
Sadly, the first city in the UK to make the list is London at a measly 41st place. It was even lower for sanitation, found at 67th place.
Yet Kate Fitzpatrick, Mercer’s Global Mobility Practice Leader for Britain and Ireland commented: “Cities in the UK continue to rank highly for quality of living, and remain attractive destinations for multinationals and their employees.”
Germany and Switzerland – countries which regularly feature highly when it comes to ranking destinations – each had three cities in the top ten with Basel, Zurich and Geneva, and Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich.
Mercer’s Slagin Parakatil said: “As well as a significant hinder to a city’s, business and talent attractiveness, poor quality of living can considerably impact on an expatriate’s lifestyle.
“Younger generations, millennials in particular, often have high expectations in terms of lifestyle, leisure and entertainment opportunities.”
“Some of the highest increases in living standards over the last 20 years have been observed in Eastern European cities,” said Martine Ferland, Senior Partner and President of Mercer’s EuroPac Region.
Some of the worst countries were Baghdad, Iraq which came in last place, followed by Bangui, Central African Republic and Sana’a, Yemen Arab Republic.
