Meghan Markle’s engagement ring from Prince Harry is a stunning piece with three diamonds and a gold band – which the Prince revealed is Meghan’s favourite metal.
The huge central stone is a new purchase, while the two diamonds either side belonged to Princess Diana, and are from her private jewellery collection.
It was rumoured the romantic Prince would gift Meghan an engagement ring featuring some of his mother’s jewels, and Harry has done just that.
How much is Meghan Markle’s engagement ring worth?
Grant Mobley, a gemologist and Director at Pluczenik, one of the world’s leading diamantaires estimates the ring would be worth around £122,500.
He said: “From seeing the pictures, I would estimate that the centre diamond is a slightly elongated cushion cut diamond, approximately 3.00 – 4.00 carats. The side diamonds are more than likely oval or round cut diamonds about 0.75 carats each.
“The value of such a centre diamond greatly depends on the colour and clarity of the stone. While it is very difficult to tell the clarity without examining the stone, one would imagine Prince Harry would pick something close to flawless.
“In that case, we would estimate that the value of the centre stone would be around £70,000 – £115,000, while the side stones would have an intrinsic value of around £3,750 each.”
The ring has great sentimental value to Harry and Meghan and the market at large thanks to its royal connection.
The Prince chose a stone from a location special to both him and Meghan, Mr Mobey explained: “The centre stone is a diamond from Botswana, one of Harry’s favourite places, and a beautiful country positively transformed by the diamond industry into one of Africa’s most stable and prosperous nations.
“Harry took Meaghan there for a visit giving the diamond even greater sentimental significance, and the Prince can feel gratified that his purchase generates revenue that goes right back into Botswana’s economy.”
The connection to Princess Diana also makes the ring far more valuable than the sum of its (still considerably expensive) parts.
Mr Mobley added: “Since the side diamonds are said to be from Princess Diana’s collection, this makes their value greater due to their rich history and inherent value. Anything belonging to the “People’s Princess” is always going to be worth more.
“Although many people may not know it, diamonds not only maintain their value over time but they actually appreciate in value, unlike laboratory grown diamonds that have recently emerged in the diamond market.
“This is a classic three stone design that will be completely timeless. The perfect bit of old and new have been combined in this ring to match the style of Miss Markle. The clean, modern – yet timeless – design will easily complement Markle’s personal style, and will suit any occasion, from casual to black-tie.”
Prince Harry’s design skills might have come as a shock to some, but the jeweller claims Harry has created the perfect ring for his wife-to-be.
He said: “By changing up the traditional three stone design with a new cushion cut diamond and adding precious diamonds from his mother’s collection provides a perfect combination that is both modern and traditional, and one she can truly call her own.
“Three-stone engagement rings are said to represent friendship, love and fidelity, as well as past, present and future.
“I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of them on soon-to-be brides this upcoming season.”
