Martin Lewis Money Show: Will it be more expensive to travel after the UK leaves the EU?

Martin Lewis, 46, is helping Britons save money by locating the best deals and tips this Christmas.

His live Money Show explained some of the top ways to hold the pennies.

The expert revealed the nation can Brexit-proof their finances following the current government instability ahead of the country leaving the EU.

He spoke to one audience member about travelling after Brexit.

Will it be expensive to travel after Brexit?

Martin reiterated that it all depended on the outcome of the UK leaving the EU in March 2019.

“We don’t know if there will be a deal or a no-deal,” he said.

“I do think it is likely that markets won’t like a no-deal so the pound will weaken and make it more expensive to travel.”

The pound is currently weak against the euro and the dollar, having fallen this week after a spate of MP resignations this month.

It is stronger if travelling to Turkey or Japan however, against the lira or the yen.

Should I be buying my euros now or waiting?

Martin explained: “As we don’t know if it will be a deal or no deal, you can look at the rate now and see if you can afford a holiday at the current rates.”

“You should only [buy euros] if you went on holiday and were not bothered if the rates were then better.”

For anyone who felt uncertain, Martin advised travellers to hedge their bets.

“Do half your currency now and half your currency then,” he explained.

This can mean locking in the current rate and also holding out hope for a better rate at the same time.

Anyone using their debit or credit card abroad should always pay in local currency.

Bank cards have a better rate when using the local currency and converting as opposed to paying in sterling.

Martin Lewis also touched upon the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and whether it will still be valid.

As the UK will be in a transition period until 2020, he reassured one audience member it would at least be valid until then.

The EHIC does not mean avoiding travel insurance however; the card only provides the same healthcare as locals for free, not all hospital bills.
