Martin Lewis: Avoid using THESE debit cards abroad to avoid steep charges

The 45-year-old Money Saving Expert was in Bournemouth this week for his ITV show.

To coincide with this week’s heatwave, he revealed how you can save money on your vacation by avoiding using certain debit cards abroad.

After uncertainty over the General Election this year and Brexit, the pound to euro exchange rate has taken a hit.

Before Brexit, the exchange rate was around 1.40 to 1.60 euros to the pound, whereas now, it’s 1.14 euros to the pound at best.

But despite sterling falling, holidaymakers can still save money by making sure they don’t use certain debit cards while abroad.

The first debit card Martin mentioned on the show not use was the Halifax debit card.

He said: “If you spend abroad using this card it charges you £1.50 each time you spend, on top of the rates on the day.”

Martin also advised against using debit cards from Santander, Bank of Scotland, Lloyds and TSB.

He also said Yorkshire Bank’s debit card has a minimum exchange fee but will add over a quid.

He said: “Debit cards can be bad cards.”

Martin suggested using an overseas credit card for spending abroad, and revealed his top choices.

The Halifax Clarity card has no exchange or ATM fees and the cash withdrawal interest if repaid in full is between 18.9 per cent and 25.9 per cent.

The Barclaycard Platinum Travel Card also has no exchange or ATM fees, but also no cash withdrawal interest to repay.

Creation Everyday’s credit card has no exchange or ATM fees and a 12.9 per cent to 21.9 per cent cash withdrawal interest to pay if repaid in full.

And the Santander Zero card has no exchange or ATM fees and a cash withdrawal interest if repaid in full of 18.9 per cent.

Martin revealed more information on how to get the best travel rates this week.
