Lucifer plot hole: Fans spot huge error with angel Uriel

After the series was cancelled on Fox, fans were ecstatic when Netflix decided to renew the fantasy crime series for a further two seasons. Lucifer viewers have now been debating about a glaring plot hole regarding a fan favourite supporting character.

Based on Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics, Lucifer (played by Tom Ellis) takes inspiration from Mike Carey’s series of off-shoots from the surreal comic book run.

As ever with Neil Gaiman properties, the series plays fast and loose when adapting pre-existing mythology.

Lucifer primarily takes inspiration from Biblical characters, but takes considerable artistic liberties with the Christian canon.

Fans recently took to Reddit to discuss one of the series’ major angelic characters, Uriel (Michael Imperioli).

A middle-born angel, Uriel serves as a secondary antagonist when he travels to Earth in an attempt to eradicate Lucifer’s mother, Goddess (Tricia Helfer).

Reddit user ZedGenius asked: “In season four, it is stated that angels were created the way they are now, and they didn’t exist as kids.”

As with Biblical tradition, angels are eternal beings who don’t experience a short, developmental life like mortal humans.

However, the fan points out that this angelic lore didn’t always apply to the show.

Other fans took to the comments to discuss whether or not this inconsistency makes a lick of sense.

One viewer said: “I don’t think the writers have fully thought through the universe, heaven, hell, angels and demons, they make it up as they go along. So it ain’t gonna be perfect.”

The sporadic and unpredictable nature of the show’s mythology certainly adds to its charm, but glaring errors like this frequently leaves fans scratching their heads when they go back to earlier episodes.

Another added: “I kind of think inconsistency is the name of the game; writer incompetence is the alternative hypothesis, and I don’t think it fits.

“We’re meant to be confused and perennially asking what the f*** is going on, will they finally reveal the explanation that will make sense of it all?”
