Whether fans have seen Logan all the way through, or just the trailer, something terrible had to have happened for Wolverine and Professor X to be hiding in 2029 Mexico.
To understand how they ended up in this position, we have to consider the crazy X-Men timeline.
The last time the two characters were together was at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2023, after the timeline was changed to prevent a post-apocalyptic future. (Stay with us).
Wolverine woke up in this new reality to find he was a history teacher at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters in Westchester County in New York.
Apart from seeing Professor X, he’s surprised to find the likes of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Beast alive, after they died in the old timeline’s X-Men: The Last Stand.
It all looked like a happy ending, but what happened in the six years between Days of Future Past and Logan, and what about the rest of the X-Men?
In Logan we find a very elderly Professor Charles Xavier suffering from Alzheimer’s and prone to seizure attacks which paralyse people.
Only Wolverine is left unaffected because of his adamantium skull protecting his brain, leaving him the responsibility of injecting Professor X with the medication he needs to stop such occurrences.
While it’s never fully explain, the Westchester Incident is alluded to in Logan and is responsible for why we find the superheroes living in such dyer conditions.
At one point in Logan, Professor X says: “I did something. Something unspeakable.
“I remember what happened in Westchester. Up until today, I didn’t know. You wouldn’t tell me.”
Another clue in the film is after a seizure in the Oklahoma City hotel, when a news report on TV compares it to the Westchester Incident that left 600 people injured.
It’s also been confirmed that seven X-Men were killed, which could explain the absence of major characters last seen at the end of Days of Future Past like Storm, Jean Grey and Rogue.
Presumably the incident meant that Wolverine went on the run with Professor X to protect him, while the school at X-Mansion was shut down and the X-Men disbanded.
Logan director James Magold has even revealed in a recent interview with Coming Soon that the film was originally going to begin with a flashback of the Westchester Incident. However he decided to cut the scene.
He said: “It also made the movie about that. It was really interesting.
“It suddenly made the movie about X-Men dying as opposed to allowing the movie to be a kind of unwinding onion, like allowing you to kind of enter the story and go, ‘Where is this going?’
“It was so large and loomed so large, and I felt like it also was still falling into the formula of the movies, with the big opener, that is setting up the mythology first.”
He added: “I thought, ‘What if we do an opener that leans into character first? Actually underplay those things?’
“Let them just feel like it’s more like a—what’s that? A normal thing, like it’s happened.
“And instead of underlining it, yeah. Just let it live in the background of all these characters.”
