Line of Duty season 4 finale: Martin Compston hints at DS Arnott death ‘We’ll be bereft’

Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott was sensationally thrown down a flight of stairs by the still-unknown balaclava man in episode three of the BBC series, with viewers fearing it was the end for the police officer.

However, in last Sunday’s instalment, Steve appeared alive in hospital but faced spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

Actor Martin, whose TV credits include Monarch of the Glen and In Plain Sight, said it was “likely” that one of the main cast would be dead before the series ended, given the show’s habit of bumping off its stars.

“With Line of Duty, you never know,” he teased, speaking to Radio Times about whether he would be back for season five.

“It will be heartbreaking when it happens, but one of us is likely to go at some point. We’ll be bereft when it happens.”

The 32-year-old is currently away in Los Angeles, which is just as well given the high level of interest in Steve’s fate.

He continued: “The way it’s worked out I’ve been away when each series has gone out. But the state my character’s in at the moment, that’s probably a good thing. It avoids a lot of questions.”

Meanwhile, Vicky McClure, who plays Steve’s colleague Kate Fleming, said she “hoped” Kate would make it to the next series.

When asked whether Kate would survive the finale with Steve and Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), she told the publication: “Here’s hoping.”
