Larry Lamb: Why I’ll never forget trekking in the Himalayan foothills

He lives with French artist Marie Victorine in North London.

What’s been your most memorable holiday?

My son George took me off to the Himalayan foothills in Nepal for my 60th birthday.

We went on a 10-day trek around the Annapurna mountain range walking all day and staying in little lodges.

In the distance you’ve got Mount Everest and it’s just fabulous.

Being in a place I’ve never been to before and talking to people I’ve never run into before, was a joy.

And your worst?

One of the holidays I had with my parents at a holiday camp in England. I just remember it raining. And there’s nothing much to do in a holiday camp if it’s raining except listen to your parents fighting.

Best souvenir?

When I was in Australia doing the jungle, my partner and I took off in a campervan and found ourselves by the side of a lake in Queensland where we discovered these pieces of petrified wood under the water.

We brought them home.

Best book?

I’m currently reading Adults In The Room by Yanis Varoufakis and it’s about the economic struggle Greece is having with the authorities.

How do you spend your time on holiday?

Keeping out of the sun and talking to locals.

I like to go where I can speak the language and I speak French, German, Italian and Spanish to a degree where I don’t have to go into sign language to get simple things.

Where would you revisit?

I’ve just been on a Thomson cruise and I’d go back to one of the two places I’d not been to before – Ceuta and Melilla.

They’re lovely Spanish holdings right across from Gibraltar, so they’re part of Spain but in Morocco – they’re every bit as Spanish as Gibraltar is British.

Where are you off to next?

I am going to star in a travel documentary around Turkey with my boy.

We’re going to six different places around the country to show what’s available to tourists.

To celebrate the launch of TUI Discovery 2, Thomson Cruises has teamed up with Larry as he takes us on a journey of discovery in a bid to meet an eclectic mix of different Mediterranean Cruise Mates. Follow his journey at cruisemates.co.uk
