Kate, 50, was introducing Good Morning Britain with co-host Eamonn Holmes at the start of the show at 6am this morning.
Feeling something itchy at the back of her head, she reached for a scratch and dissolved in fits of giggles as she pulled the curler out.
Interrupting Holmes, she laughed: “I’ve just discovered I’ve still got the roller in my hair. I wondered what was itching me.
“They’ve left a roller in. I’m genuinely blushing. Go out as you come in, useless, it could be a bird’s nest. It could have been anything.”
Holmes and fellow presenter Charlotte Hawkins joined in the laughter and viewers were quick to tweet about the incident with two like-minded people commiserating: “Could have been worse it might have been Nits” and: “At least it wasn’t nits making your head itch”.
It is not the first time the presenter has suffered a wardrobe malfunction on air.
Last year, during a segment on the Queen’s 91st birthday she calmly asked her guest, royal photographer Arthur Edwards: “Has the Queen ever lost the button off the back of her dress during an important moment like mine did just there?
“I must apologise for hoisting my dress up but its burst, it has burst, I’m afraid. So, I’m sorry about that Arthur, you’d never get that with the Queen.”
The photographer replied: “If it did, there would be someone on hand to give you a safety pin.”
Co-host Ben Shephard embarrassedly added: “As opposed to me, being no help at all.”
