Kate Garraway left red-faced after branding Susanna Reid a DOG in awkward gaffe

The 49-year-old was left red-faced after she inadvertently called Susanna, 46, a dog on the ITV breakfast programme.

She made the faux pas shortly after a segment on anxiety separation in dogs when co-host Ben Shephard read out some comments from viewers.

Ben, 42, was heard telling his Good Morning Britain colleagues that many had managed to resolve their pet distress problems.

“Lots of people have got it cracked. One viewer said, ‘My chihuahua and Jack Russell put themselves to bed and sleep most of the day’,” he explained.

He went on to add with somewhat disdain: “And Scott, I think, has the answer: ‘My dog Monty just loves to watch Kate and Susanna on Good Morning Britain’. Just the girls.”

Kate jumped in and quipped: “It knows it’s own!” It was then that she realised that she had accidentally called Susanna a dog and hastily tried to retract her statement: “No! Actually I don’t mean that about Susanna, I meant it about me!”

Luckily, Susanna saw the funny side and burst into a fit of laughter after Kate’s hilarious blunder.

“Clearly, you put him to sleep,” Ben joked to Kate as he added: “Monty is very comfortable sleeping with you.”

Good Morning Britain was tackling the issue of leaving dogs at home after one viewer agreed to have their Italian mastiff filmed to show the distress they suffered being left isolated.

The programme also had a representative from The Dogs Trust giving advice, saying that the issue was easily resolved.

Rachel Casey from the organisation explained: “This is a problem. It is completely preventable if people get the right information.”

The scenes come in contrast to earlier on in the show when Susanna fiercely grilled foreign secretary Boris Johnson about calling Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn a “mutton-headed old mugwump”.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
