Jennifer Lawrence quits acting for a surprising career change: 'I'm taking a year off'

The Oscar-winning star has confirmed plans to take a year’s break in her acting career, with Red Sparrow and the next X-Men film her last projects for a while.

“I’m going to take the next year off,” she told Entertainment Tonight in a new interview.

“I’m going to be working with this organisation as a part of Represent.Us… trying to get young people engaged politically on a local level.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with partisan [politics].”

She added: “It’s just anti-corruption and stuff trying to pass state-by-state laws that can help prevent corruption, fix our democracy.”

For now, Red Sparrow puts her in a leading role alongside Joel Edgerton, Ciaran Hinds, Charlotte Rampling and Joely Richardson.

She plays a Russian spy who falls for a CIA officer and considers becoming a double agent.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, it takes its leads from the book of the same name by Jason Matthews.

Reviews have been mixed thus far, with Rotten Tomatoes displaying an aggregated score of 62% following its advance screenings.

Lawrence also hosted at the BAFTAs last night, with some viewers questioning a remark she made to compere Joanna Lumley.

Red Sparrow is out on March 2.
