He is the most famous fictional spy in the world, but what if James Bond was never supposed to be a secret agent?
After over 50 years of movies, fans have frequently pointed out how unsubtle the spy is, telling everyone his real name and taking part in public fights, car chases and explosions.
How exactly does this MI6 agent keep his cover in all his espionage?
Well one fan reckons the answer is that he’s actually a distraction for the real MI6 secret agents.
Reddit User Granite-M argues: “He waltzes into highly volatile situations wearing flashy clothes and driving expensive cars.
“He orders signature drinks and identifies himself with his real name, which has become so well known that his reputation precedes him.
“His operations generally devolve into massive shootouts and balls of flame visible from miles away.
“He isn’t supposed to be a secret agent. He’s a red herring for the real secret agents.
They continue: “Anywhere that Bond goes, there is a handful of actual secret agents at the same time. They look and act like ordinary tourists or local labourers.
“They wait until Bond starts crashing cars, and when everyone is looking at the mayhem, they surreptitiously place listening devices or photograph sensitive documents, and then leave without anyone knowing that anything ever happened, including Bond himself.
“If he knew about the real secret operations, he’d almost certainly blow their cover or try to sleep with them.”
The Reddit user added: “Then, when all the emergency services are deployed to put out the fires, the secret assets quietly slip out the back, take a fishing boat back to home base, and get properly debriefed while Bond is contracting a new venereal disease and the terrorists are shaking their fists at the unkillable British murder machine.
“Bond was never meant to do any real secret agent work.
“He’s just a distraction from the real agents doing unglamorous work behind the scenes.”
