The 43-year actor is best known for his striking villains from General Zod in Man of Steel to Richard Strickland in The Shape of Water.
With much Oscar attention on the latter film, movie fans are getting very excited by the idea of Shannon playing the villain in James Bond 25.
Reddit user thewarinspector posted their support, which has been backed by thousands.
They write: “I think Michael Shannon is one of America’s greatest living actors, and having finally seen The Shape of Water, his performance made me think he’d make a fantastic villain for Bond 25.”
They continued: “He is physically imposing, he can act menacing, but always brings either a manic or droll sense of sinister humour to whatever role he plays (a broad spectrum from Premium Rush to The Shape of Water).
“In a way, he could bring to the classic Bond villains something fresh like Javier Bardem did to Silva.
“Also, it’d be amazing to see Michael Shannon hamming it up in a Danny Boyle film!”
Last Christmas Kenneth Branagh said he wanted to play the villain in Craig’s final Bond movie.
Speaking with The Mirror, the 57-year-old said: “I think as an actor that is always delicious to play.
“I am a connoisseur of those Bond villains. But is a hard one to do. I loved Javier Bardem in Skyfall. [Craig’s villains were] almost Shakespearean.”
James Bond 25 will be released in November 2019.
