James Bond 25: Christoph Waltz’s Blofeld to return with Daniel Craig in Spectre follow-up?

It’s been over two years since the two actors co-starred in Spectre and now it looks like Craig is ready to make his big comeback.

Yesterday multiple sources claimed that

But what about Waltz’s Blofeld, the MI6 agent’s arch villain, who was captured by British authorities on Westminster Bridge during Spectre’s epic climax?

As head of Spectre, Blofeld would regularly return during Sean Connery’s classic era, so surely he’s due a return too?

In January last year reports claimed that

As the star’s silence continued, Waltz was asked about returning as Blofeld in September.

During an interview with German magazine Zeit-Magazin Mann, he said: “I don’t know about [playing Blofeld again].

“Nobody knows. It wasn’t talked about, except in the press. Right now, nobody even knows which studio will produce the next and if Daniel will return. All of that is filed under ‘carry on.’

Waltz also had doubts about the part, he added: “I cannot claim that I’ve really nailed Blofeld. Overall, it held water and was okay. But it wasn’t what I’ve been looking for. I was searching for more inspiration.”

Assuming Craig will sign back on, it may seem easy to have a plot where Blofeld escapes custody to unleash more evil plans, but this already looks less likely.

The 25th official James Bond film has already begun production without Craig signed on, with the Mayor of Dubrovnik, Croatia letting slip that advanced negotiations had begun on the next 007 adventure.

The producers are keen for the film to be released in 2018, marking the newly established three year gap between films.

The most obvious reason for why it looks like Blofeld won’t be back is because reports indicate that

This would indicate that the next story is a standalone narrative, to make it easy for a new actor to star in the role, if Craig decides not to return.

Technically it’s still possible for Blofeld to return played by a different actor, as was normal in the Connery era, but our money’s on a Goldfinger or Skyfall style standalone, that only alludes to the bigger story arc of Spectre and Quantum as organisations.
