Jacob Rees-Mogg CONDEMNS abortion and gay marriage in GMB row 'Completely opposed'

The Tory backbencher, who’s been widely tipped to replace Theresa May as Conservative leader, possibly Prime Minister, stressed that he “supports the teaching of the Catholic church,” suggesting that same-sex weddings are a sin.

He also insisted that he doesn’t support abortion under any circumstance, including rape.

“Plenty of Catholics believe in gay marriage,” Susanna Reid fumed.

Mogg elaborated: “But marriage is a sacrament and a sacrament lies with the church and not with parliament.

“Does that mean you oppose same-sex marriage?” the fiery Good Morning Britain host continued, which was met with a feeble: “I support the teaching of the Catholic church.”

Piers Morgan waded in: “That means you oppose. I’m a Catholic but I actually don’t agree with the Catholic church. Why are you so afraid to oppose it?”

“You voted against it,” added Reid.

Mogg calmly continued: “The marriage is the most important thing. This is not how people arrange their lives. Marriage is a sacrament of the church and not the state.”

When pushed to reveal if he thought gay sex was a sin, Mogg’s response was equally as hazy.

“It is quite clear under the teachings of the church not for me to judge,” he said. “I strongly feel that I should not judge what other people do.

“I think I’ve answered the straight question,” he hissed, as Piers and Susanna demanded a clear-cut response. “The teaching and the faith of the church is authoritative, but it is equally within the teachings of the church that is it not for me to judge others.”

“If you were Prime Minister, would the teachings of the church take precedent over your political views?” Reid asked.

“These matters in the House of Commons are free votes, they’re not a party vote,” Mogg explained.

“But you’re being touted as someone who could lead a party and become Prime Minister of a multi-faith country,” barked Reid.

Mogg repeated: “None of these are party political; they’re not determined by the Prime Minister.”

“What’s your views of abortion?” Reid frowned.

“I’m completely opposed to abortion,” Mogg vehemently hissed. “It’s a completely different kettle of fish [to gay marriage].”

After Reid asked if he felt the same about women who fall pregnant after being raped, he sighed: “I’m afraid so.”

“My personal opinion is life begins at conception.”

During today’s particularly explosive GMB, Morgan also snapped at Dennis Rodman after the basketball ace laughed off the threats from North Korea while he also axed an interview when it got too personal.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
