ITV This Morning: Phillip Schofield close to tears after announcing ‘sad death'

Phillip Schofield started This Morning in a sombre way earlier today.

The host announced there had been a shock “death” on the show, but it wasn’t all as it seemed.

He started: “Something quite sad now to start the show.”

Trying to stop himself from crying, the presenter added: “Before all of that, you look around our studio and you admire the brilliant job the art department have done decorating for Christmas.”

Phillip went on: “We have something of a confession to make.

“Up the road, is the This Morning office where the team put the programme together.

“They’ve not been quite as attentive to their decorations.”

Sombre music could be heard on screens as the presenter continued to explain what had actually happened.

“After Steve Wilson’s Christmas tree demo on the programme three weeks ago we decided to recycle the Christmas tree we had in the studio.

“”It was the envy of the Loose Women, Good Morning Britain and Lorraine teams.

“They’re all on the same floor,” Phillip revealed.

He went on: “It began to take a turn for the worse.

“Even the fake snow the team applied to cover it up couldn’t keep the magic alive.

“What you see today in the studio is all that’s left of it… so what on earth went wrong?”

Rochelle finally announced how one of their Christmas trees had perished before the big day.

She turned to TV gardener David Domoney to try and give viewers some help and advice.

The expert announced: “It looks like its left over from Halloween.

Less fairy lights and decorations and more pumpkin and a pair of fangs.”

He went on to explain how anyone with a real tree should try and keep it well-moisturised.

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV from 10.30am.
