Is the Maldives safe? Updated holiday advice after political protests erupt

The Maldives is currently under siege from protests after a military blockade of the Parliament.

This is due to the president having locked down the Parliament which has lead to clashes from the opposition.

The protests are currently taking place in the capital Male.

However many tourists may be asking whether the Maldives is still safe to travel to for a luxury holiday.

The FCO have updated the travel advice for any tourists heading to the region.

On the website, they state: “Maldivian military blockaded parliament and forcefully removed MPs from the building, leading to a disturbance around the parliament building.

“Previous demonstrations and political protests have led to violence and arrests.

“You should take appropriate security precautions, comply with local security requirements and avoid large gatherings, protests and rallies.”

The Maldives is a popular location for luxury travel and honeymooners.

Earlier this year the country reported a 10 per cent increase in travellers, breaking the 100,000 mark for the many islands.

Boasting 1,190 islands, it is a prime location for snorkelling and scuba diving.

However, human rights in the country is a contentious issue, with reports of corruption and brutality among locals.

Whilst the country may not be very safe at the moment, the best countries to stay safe in have been revealed.

In the case of World War 3, Finland appears to be the safest country as ranked by the World Economic Forum.

Controversy, Qatar was also suggested by other online users followed by Singapore.

Sadly, the UK never made the list.
