Hotels are often a luxurious escape from day to day life for most travellers, wanting to relax in a different environment.
Yet a recent investigation has revealed that the clean sheets may not be so clean after all.
It concluded that even the towels and the glasses don’t escape being left dirty from previous guests.
The investigation by Los Angles news team NBC4 analysed a number of hotels in popular tourist destinations such as Palm Springs and hotels near Disneyland.
It may make many think twice before booking into a hotel.
As part of the test, the team sprayed the towels and sheets with an invisible spray that leaves a mark.
It can only be revealed by using UV lights that make it glow bright blue.
This would then prove whether the sheets had been cleaned between guests.
Worryingly, the investigation found that the pillows still had the marks on them, meaning they were left unwashed from before.
The team also did the same with the towels and the cups; the marks were also left behind and meaning they had not been cleaned.
Steve Steece, a schoolteacher who was staying at the hotel, told the team he was “speechless” at the disgusting discovery.
When approaching the hotels, many stated that it did not reflect the high standards of the hotels and that investigations would be launched.
It isn’t the first time a video has emerged showing the poor levels of cleanliness found at a hotel.
An undercover investigation at some of the top hotels in China found that cleaners were using toilet brushes to clean the cups and sinks.
They also used previous dirty towels from guests who had checked out to mop the area.
Some of the hotels in the investigation cost as much as £370 a night in the city.
Many dirty secrets of the hospitality industry have been revealed over the years.
One frequent traveller warned guests to never use the kettle, as people have been known to boil wash their underwear in it.
Others advise people to avoid using the remote control or the air conditioning unit.
Both of them rarely get cleaned and could be harbouring all kinds of germs and bacteria.
