Both ITV presenters struggled to contain their shock as a woman called “Sophie” – not her real name – contacted the programme to share her shocking and heartbreaking workplace bullying ordeal.
Holly, 36, introduced the segment, telling viewers: “First we’re going to speak to Sophie and I am so sorry you’ve gone through this. It must be so awful for you. This happened in 2015 and you’ve been signed off from work because you had a miscarriage.
“I’m sorry to hear that, that’s awful in itself. The problems started when she went back to work after a week off.”
Sophie then told Phillip, 55, and Holly: “The doctor signed me off for a week and going back to work I was told by one of my colleagues that I’d be better off without the baby because it would probably be disabled.
“I was given extra work and told, ‘Well, you’ve had a week off’. I’d only just bought my first house two weeks before this and I’d only had my mortgage for two weeks, so I felt like I couldn’t leave.
“I didn’t have the confidence to tell them what they were saying was so insensitive. I didn’t know how to deal with it and I just kept my head down and got on with it. But I had to have counselling and it still affects me now.”
As Sophie recounted the horrific story, Holly and Phillip both looked shocked and upset by what they were hearing.
Phillip looked like he was particularly affected by Sophie’s story and exclaimed: “I can’t believe that anyone would be so mean.”
Co-presenter Holly nodded in agreement as psychologist Emma Kenny offered advice to Sophie, whose voice could be heard breaking at time as she told them about her bullying experience.
