We’ve been jonesing for Todd Haynes’s adaptation of Brian Selznick’s novel Wonderstruck since it was first announced nearly two years ago, and can you blame us: it’s his Carol follow-up, it’s his fourth collaboration with Safe star Julianne Moore, and it’s based on a book by the author of The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which was the basis for Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, another example of a traditionally adult-oriented filmmaker creating a delightful family film.
Anyway, here’s your first full trailer, and it looks so good I can hardly stand it:
Fun fact: this is the second trailer this week (following All I See Is You) to use music by the Langley Schools Music Project, a ‘70s-era recording of an elementary school choir singing pop songs of the era, which didn’t see widespread exposure until it was rediscovered and released in 2001. Considering how much marketers love the sound of little kids singing, it’s kind of amazing it took this long for these to become go-to trailer cues.
Wonderstruck screened at Cannes and Telluride; it will play as the Centerpiece selection at the New York Film Festival before its limited release on October 20.
