Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced the next wave of Injustice 2‘s downloadable content characters, and it includes one big surprise: Hellboy from Dark Horse Comics. He’ll be joined by Mortal Kombat Raiden’s and the Aquaman villain Black Manta.
Injustice 2 has been a big hit. It was the top-selling game in the U.S. during its debut month in May. In July, it was still at No. 6. New content like this will keep those players engaged (and spending money) and attract new ones.
All three will be available for purchase on September 12 as part of the Fighter Pack #2. You can either buy the pack or the fighters individually, but you already have access to them if you’ve bought the Injustice 2 Ultimate Edition or Ultimate Pack, which includes every DLC character. One of the three will be available on September 12, but Warner Bros. did not specify which one or when the others will follow. It did note that those who bought one of the packs will have access to the characters “before they are available a la carte.”
Injustice 2 is a fighting game that focuses on characters from the DC comics universe. So Black Manta’s addition makes sense. And, since Mortal Kombat studio NetherRealm makes the game, it’s not too surprising to see Raiden. Sub-Zero has even already debuted as a DLC fighter.
But Hellboy is the first comic book character outside of DC to appear in Injustice. The demonic (don’t worry, he’s on our side) hero debuted in comic form in 1993, but he was also played by Ron Perlman in a couple of movies by Guillermo del Toro in the 2000s. His addition can help attract Hellboy fans that wouldn’t normally be interested in a D.C. fighting game.
