Grenfell Tower firefighters recall horror of inferno in ITV show: 'It did mess me up'

Borough commander Richard Welch explained the initial horror he felt on his way to the scene, as the number of required response units increased by the minute.

By the time he got there, he knew he had a “serious incident” on his hands.

As various firefighters on the scene recalled seeing what was described by one as “a bomb explosion”, Richard praised the brave heroes who ran towards the danger, not away from it, especially when the building was structurally compromised.

He described: “The firefighters were exhausted carrying people out of the building but they went back in to save more people.

“If [the building] was going to collapse then we were going to die trying.

“Every single person in that building was willing to lose their own life to save someone else,” Richard explained.

Crew manager, Edric Kennedy-Macfoy explained that he was tasked with clearing one floor after the fire had been put out as he searched for casualties.

Harrowingly, he revealed: “I was sent to a specific floor to deal with a number of casualties to bring them down… Deceased.

“Every single room looked like a bomb had gone off.

“The thing with this is that it happened and it did mess me up a bit, if I’m being honest,” Edric confessed as he lowered his head.

ITV viewers have praised the “heroes” from that night for their incredible bravery at the scene, with one posting: “Proud of emergency services in the UK #InsideLondonFireBrigade.”

Another added: “It’s crazy what these firefighters are willing to do to save people. Literal heroes right here #InsideLondonFireBrigade.”

A third tweeted: “Seeing what our firefighters do from their point of view shows just how heroic they are. Words can’t even describe #InsideLondonFireBrigade.”
