Great Canal Journeys review: A joyful experience that is about to end

Returning for a new series, jolly thesps Prunella Scales and Timothy West were drifting happily through the Norfolk Broads.

They’re so used to doing this show that they almost behave as if we’re not there.

That’s the secret of it.

As it began, however, Tim reminded the audience that this is “the final curtain”, something you don’t want to hear.

As we know, Prunella has been ill with dementia for 20 years but her recollection of childhood holidays, and being evacuated during the war, seem to be pinpoint.

Perhaps the very act of doing this show has been a perfect way for her to rekindle her memories.

They have also lived through another era, illustrated by this snippet of dialogue, while viewing an old holiday brochure featuring a lady in a bathing costume.

Prunella: “How often can you wear a bikini in the Broads?”

Tim: “As much as possible, I would think.”
