Geneva motor show 2018PR

The Geneva motor show had a lot to offer this year, and this selection truly stood out

Jaguar I-Pace

On sale: summer

Price: from £58,995 (after Government grant)

Jaguar electrified the crowds at the Geneva show with the world debut of its eagerly-awaited new electric I-Pace.

In a show dominated by news of electric vehicles and urban mobility, the plug-in Jaguar stole the limelight tearing up the electric car rulebook. Jaguar design director Ian Callum has produced a gorgeously clean and sleek shape, both inside and out for this third member of the Coventry firm’s Pace family – the biggest sellers in its line-up.

Jaguar I-Pace

With 400bhp and four-wheel drive, the I-Pace can race from 0 to 60mph in just 4.5 seconds and boasts a 298 mile range from its 90kW battery with a 30 minute charge giving about 80 miles at a rapid charging point.

Jaguar says that this I-Pace will only be a single stand-alone model, but longer term it’s hard not to see it eventually becoming an entire electric car model range with different power output versions as well as bodystyles.

Underlining that is that since it announced plans to produce the I-Pace, Jaguar has received an incredible 45,000 ‘expressions of interest’ from potential customers – one of the highest that it has ever received.

Tesla had better watch its back, Jaguar might be about to show it how to build electric cars properly…

Hyundai Kona electricHYUNDAI

Hyundai Kona electric

Hyundai Kona electric

On sale: summer

Price: est from £28,000

As if Jaguar’s I-Pace hadn’t shaken up the electric car market enough at Geneva, then this new version of the Hyundai Kona followed it up. The Kona might have only recently arrived into showrooms, but Hyundai isn’t wasting any time to introduce this all-electric version.

Available with two different batteries, one with 99kW and the other with 150kW, each with differing levels of range (186 miles or 292 miles respectively), the Kona electric can get from 0 to 60mph in just 7.6 seconds and features the same layout and features as the conventionally powered version.

Although there aren’t any hybrid versions of the Kona due, after the success of its Ioniq in all its forms, Hyundai is rapidly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the world of electric and hybrid cars.

Peugeot 508PEUGOT

Peugeot 508

Peugeot 508

On sale: autumn

Price: est from £31,000

Not so long ago, the arrival of a new contender into the repmobile market would have been massive news, but the proliferation of crossovers means that this sector is a shadow of its former self.

That’s not to say that this new Peugeot 508 isn’t worth a look mind you. The French firm has followed the lead of Volkswagen’s Arteon with a more lithe and sportier shape than before that makes the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia look about as trendy as a crochet set.

We approve of the 508’s coupe looks, especially as it houses a new, more practical five-door hatchback bodystyle and the latest version of Peugeot’s i-cockpit technology used to great success in the 3008 and 5008.

Next year the range is expected to be joined by an SW Estate version and also a hybrid powertrain to join the initial petrol and diesel engines. This might be an area of the car market that’s in decline, but this new 508 shows there’s plenty of life left in it yet.

Range Rover SV CoupeRANGE ROVER

Range Rover SV Coupe

Range Rover SV Coupe

On sale: October

Price: £240,000 (yes, really)

Forty-eight years ago, Land Rover introduced its first Range Rover, a two-door off-roader. Now with the luxury off-roader firmly part of the establishment and having expanded to a four-strong model line-up, the green oval is repeating the feat with this new SV Coupe.

Recognising the high demand for sportier versions of its Range Rover over and above even its own SVR models, the two-door SV Coupe comes with a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine with 565bhp making it the fastest ever full-size Range Rover with a 0 to 60mph time of just 5.0 seconds and 165mph top speed.

Hand-built by Land Rover’s SVO technical centre, just 999 SV Coupes will be made available worldwide with a very high level of standard equipment including LED Laser headlights, 23-speaker Meridian stereo system and, measure them, 23-inch alloy wheels.

Stunning from some angles and slightly heavy from others (especially the side), there’s no question that all of the SV Coupes will sell, but at an eye-watering £240,000, you’ll need deep pockets.

Toyota AurisTOYOTA

Toyota Auris

Toyota Auris

On sale: early 2019

Price: est from £24,000

This fourth-generation Toyota Auris might not have been the most exciting car at Geneva, but there’s still plenty to recommend it.

Toyota has sold some 460,000 hybrid versions of the Auris since 2010 and this new model will boast two different hybrids with 122bhp or 180bhp.

Crucially too, this Auris represents the beginning of the end for diesel engines in all of Toyota’s range as there simply won’t be a derv version in this Auris. Instead, there’s the potential for EV and PHEV versions in the future and also sportier Gazoo Racing hot hatch models too.

Even better, is that it’s also built at Toyota’s plant in Burnaston, so every Auris sold helps to protect the jobs of those 2500 workers in Derby.

Mercedes AMG GT four-door CoupeMERCEDES

Mercedes AMG GT four-door Coupe

Mercedes AMG GT four-door Coupe

On sale: autumn

Price: est from £120,000

If the Mercedes AMG GT sports car is too extreme for you, then how about this, a new four-door Coupe version instead?

Like its two-door stablemate, this super-saloon boasts similar looks with all the sharp edges of a ten minute-old Sherbet Lemon, but along with extra practicality with the pair of additional doors and a reasonably sized boot for this class of car.

There’s a choice of two engines with four-wheel drive, both are a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with either 585bhp or an eye-watering 639bhp in the ‘S’ version, the latter capable of the 0 to 60mph sprint in just 3.2 seconds and a 195mph top speed.

Inside there’s the same stunning interior with the gorgeous jet engine-inspired vents across the dashboard. Representing a step up from the new CLS elsewhere in the Mercedes range, this AMG GT Coupe has stolen a lead on the next BMW 8-Series unveiled at the show in concept form.

Kia CeedKIA

Kia Ceed

Kia Ceed

On sale: August

Price: est from £16,000

With the arrival of its Stinger saloon, Kia is making great strides towards introducing sportier and more dynamic models for the future.

The Korean firm is promising that’s going to be the case when this new Ceed arrives into showrooms this summer.

Looking smart and with some nice design touches throughout, the new Ceed will initially be available in five-door hatchback form with a SW estate model joining it in the autumn.

The good news is that inside the Ceed there’s a clear and well laid-out cabin with trim highlights in alloy and gloss black and there’s also a decent amount of space too.

Better yet, that promised better dynamism will be backed up with GT and GT Line versions and a sportier 1.6-litre turbo engine as well.

Along with Kia’s traditional well-equipped First Edition models on its arrival and the potential for hybrid versions in the future, it’s not hard to imagine this new Ceed continuing Kia’s current positive transformation.

Lexus UX

Lexus UX

On sale: summer

Price: est from £30,000

With its success with its larger RX, Lexus was never going to let the likes of Audi’s Q3, BMW’s X1 or the latest Volvo XC40 to enjoy the premium crossover market between them.

This new UX might look bigger than it is, but it’s Lexus’s take on the small crossover market below its existing NX model.

Continuing the sharp-edged styling themes from the rest of the range, the hourglass-style grille has been toned down somewhat although the rear is particularly striking with a prominent strip of lights across the tailgate.

Lexus is promising that the UX will be much more driver-focussed in terms of its on-road involvement but crucially it will be available only with petrol-electric hybrid engines with a potential for electric and plug-in hybrid versions in the future.

With crossover sales booming and diesel sales falling, Lexus UX’s arrival could be perfect timing.
