The breakfast show spoke to the mother of one schoolboy who had taken part in the BBC series No More Boys and Girls: Can Our Kids Go Gender Free? ahead of the broadcast this evening.
While the headmistress of Lanesend Primary School, which took part in the social experiment, praised it, audiences watching at home were less convinced and took to social media to slam the concept.
One person posted on Twitter: “Those fools of parents who thinks classes should be gender-neutral really want to have a look in the mirror. Disgrace, attention-seeking!”
While a second wrote: “No they shouldn’t be gender neutral. They should just be more welcoming of children who don’t fit gender stereotypes.”
“Definitely not. I do not want my children in gender neutral environment!! Ridiculous notion,” a third angrily said.
However, there was a divide as other people thought differently and one explained: “When it comes to kids it should be about choice at the end of the day #lorraine #genderneutral.”
As another praised the idea: “Gender neutral classrooms would be great!”
A third tweeted: “Can’t wait to see @BBCTwo prog. on gender neutral schooling tonight – let’s hope it’s a step towards a more equal future for our children!”
The controversial two-part series will see Dr Javid Abelmoneim taking over Year 3 at the school on the Isle of Wight, as he explores how boys and girls are treated differently in the classroom.
He will aim to remove any differences through gender neutral treatment in a bid to even out the academic achievement gaps in the pupils’ education.
No More Boys and Girls” Can Our Kids Go Gender Free? airs on BBC Two tonight at 9pm.
