Gatwick Airport chaos as baggage system failure forces passengers to fly WITHOUT luggage

Angry travellers have taken to social media to vent their frustration at the chaotic scenes at Gatwick this morning.

A problem with the baggage system has caused lengthy check-in delays.

Passengers have claimed they have been forced to fly without their luggage due to the issue.

Daniel Glaser tweeted: “Setting off from Gatwick Airport without all bags in the hold.”

Mooi Millinery said: “Just been told no luggage for my 48hr wedding anniversary trip #ruined #devastated #shocking”.

Jeremy Westhead wrote: “Complete chaos @Gatwick_Airport this AM. In words of staff ‘worst day ever’”.

Gatwick has apologised to customers as staff work to resolve the issue.

The airport tweeted: “A problem with the baggage system is causing some disruption at the airport this morning.

“We are working hard to rectify this issue and get passengers on their way as soon as possible.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to passengers.”

Passengers have shared pictures of rows of suitcases crowding the check-in areas with people queuing in long lines beside them.

One traveller wrote: “Horrific scenes at Gatwick this morning @easyJet – very poor service and travel chaos, and no staff in sight! #shocking”.

Another said: “Happy hols..chaos at check in now sat on runway for 1.5hrs”.

Gatwick Airport told Express.co.uk: “A problem with the baggage system is causing disruption at the airport this morning.  We are working hard to rectify this issue and get passengers on their way as soon as possible and would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“To ensure that everyone gets away on time some flights are departing without all bags and bags will be forwarded to passengers at the earliest opportunity. All bags and passengers are being security screened as normal as the issue only affects the sortation of bags and not security screening.

“Our airlines are prioritising check-in according to earliest flight time and passengers should arrive at the airport the at the same time as they usually would.”
