Game of Thrones: Robb Stark wasn’t supposed to die at Red Wedding – here’s why

This includes the devastating events of the Red Wedding depicted in season three’s ninth episode, The Rains of Castamere.

After already shocking audiences with the death of Neddard Stark (played by Sean Bean) at the end of season one, Thrones fans were once again subjected to a grisly betrayal.

The episode featured the deaths of Neddard’s wife Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) and son, Robb (Richard Madden), and went down as one of the most surprising episodes of the entire series.

Robb and Catelyn’s brutal murder was instigated by Walder Frey (David Bradley) after the Stark son broke the marriage pact between their two houses, and carried out by the Starks’ own chief vassal, Roose Bolton (Michael McElhatton), who had defected to the Lannisters.
