A Song of Ice and Fire, penned by George RR Martin, began as a series back in 1996 with A Game of Thrones.
Since then, four more volumes have been published – with two more to go.
HBO helped turn the stories into one of the most successful small screen ventures of all time, but it could have been very different.
Speaking to Metro, he said Hollywood studios came knocking after the success of Lord of the Rings.
“They asked me about a possible adaptation,” he revealed.
“But at that time it was only about the big screen.
“It could have been a movie or three.”
In the same interview, Martin also admitted that he doesn’t accept ideas from fans when working on new books.
“I have enough of my own,”he grinned.
“Sometimes fan theories of the development of events look very grotesque, sometimes stunningly thought through. But in any case, they do not lead anywhere.
“I will not say in response to the reader’s version: yes, I assumed to do this. But I like to meet with fans.”
Winds of Winter does not currently have a release date.
